Learning Reflections

End of Year 1 Reflection

After one year in the OTD program I have gained innumerable skills and new ways of thinking. I can now discuss a client’s needs and hopes in a way that not only provides information for therapy interventions but also can be therapeutic for the individual. I can discuss the unique value of occupation in different contexts. Taking measurements of range of motion in joints, transferring individuals, and assessing a case are things I learned to do that I had never attempted before. I notice myself thinking in new ways when I hear of someone retiring, newly injured, or managing a toddler. I am becoming an observer of physical movement and safety in various environments and mentally considering what might need to be modified so an individual can participate. I can now look at my ongoing list of schoolwork and just get started without feeling the need to endlessly plan or worry.

My developing skills, thinking patterns, and ability to manage ongoing tasks are all preparing me for more complex skill development as a student and practicing as an OT.
